There are numerous works of fiction about alchemy and the legendary Nicholas Flamel. Michael Scott does a great job in his six book series. The series is as follows:
Book 1: The Alchemist
Book 2: The Magician
Book 3: The Sorceress
Book 4: The Necromancer
Book 5: The Warlock
Book 6: The Enchantress (coming out in 2012)
The Nicholas and Perenelle Flamel are immortal with the help of the philosopher stone. The steps for creating the philosopher stone are described in a powerful spell book. They live in San Francisco under the alias Nick and Perry Flemming where they own a book shop. The story starts when Dr. John Dee arrives to the store to steel the book of spells. He gets all but the last page of the book and kidnaps Perenelle. Without the last page the book is not nearly as powerful. Flemmings employ an assistant Josh and his twin sister works in the coffee store across the street. These twins' world turns upside down when they learn about magic and become key figures in its fate. I cannot wait until the last installment is out :-).
