This is a great time to write about "La Miserable". This literary work does an excellent job describing everyday life in the beginning of 19th century in France. I find that this story is an interweaving of several smaller story elements.
First element describes a man who is released from jail for steeling food for his starving family. He finds that due the ex-convict's ticket in his papers he is not treated fairly. He cannot find a place to stay and is forced to work for half the regular wages. He steals again from a clergyman however when the investigation is underway the authorities are told that the items that he stole are a present.
Second element describes a young woman who finds herself a single mother having to support her daughter. She is forced to leave her daughter with an inn keepers family in the country side. She thinks that this is the right thing for a little girl, unaware that her daughter is being taken advantage of by her caretakers.
These two threads make a beautiful braid when this man rescues this little girl and becomes like a father to her. This braid follows this man and the little girl to the time when she grows up and becomes a young lady. She falls in love and there is a separate story joining in.
This story is realistic and very toughing. It has elements of adventure, mystery and romance. In short it is a great story. It explores the concept of justice to the fullest.
