This is a poem written about the Borodino battle between Russian and French forces. This battle was very important. I heard the first stanza quoted a lot in everyday life and media. However until this morning did not know where that poem came from. Now I know. This is a good chance for me to read up on Russian history.

The painting pictures massive number of people involved. It was indeed a massive battle. Wikipedia reports this as the biggest and costliest battle in the Napoleon conquest of Russia. The cost is not only the financial damage but more importantly human involvement and casualties. Lermontov describes the battle scene in his poem.
